  • What are the material differences between CNC machining and 3D printing?

    Update:2022-09-23

First of all, 3D printing is an additive technology, while CNC machining is a material reduction technology, so they are very different in terms of materials. 3D printing materials mainly include liquid resin (SLA), nylon powder (SLS), metal powder (SLM), gypsum powder (full-color printing), sandstone powder (full-color printing), wire (DFM), sheet (LOM) and so on. Liquid resins, nylon powders and metal powders account for the vast majority of the industrial 3D printing market.

The materials used in CNC machining are all pieces of sheet metal, that is, plate-like materials. The length, width, height and consumption of parts are measured, and then the corresponding size of sheet metal is cut for processing. The choice of machining materials for CNC machining parts is more than that for 3D printing. General hardware and plastic metal plates can be machined for CNC machining parts, and the density of forming parts is better than that of 3D printing.

    CNC machining

As mentioned above, 3D printing is a kind of additive manufacturing. The principle of 3D printing is to cut the model into N layers /N multi-points, and then pile them up in order, like building blocks. Therefore, 3D printing can effectively produce parts with complex structures, such as hollowed out parts, while CNC machining is difficult to realize the processing of hollowed out parts. CNC machining is material reduction manufacturing, through the high-speed operation of various tools, according to the programming knife path to cut out the required parts. Therefore, CNC machining parts can only be processed with a certain degree of radian rounded corners, and can not be directly processed out of the inner right Angle, through wire cutting/sparking and other processes to achieve. Machining of external right Angle CNC parts is no problem. Therefore, 3D printing can be considered for parts with inner right angles.

If the surface area of the parts is large, it is also recommended to choose 3D printing. CNC machining parts are time-consuming to process the surface, and if the programming and machine operator is not experienced enough, it is easy to make obvious lines on the parts.
